If you got the Pemph, it probably wasn’t specifically from anything you did or didn’t do. It’s autoimmune, triggered by complex factors both genetic and environmental.
The skin has layers, and in-between these layers are kinds of protein “glue” holding them together. When the autoimmune system attacks these adhesive proteins, the structure of the skin is weakened, and separation of the skin’s layers is the outward effect from ordinary stresses from the inside or the outside.
There are many kinds of autoimmune diseases. Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis are two of the more common ones. Unfortunately if you got the Pemph, you should be on the lookout for another coexistent autoimmune disease.
Over the centuries, people (particularly those in the developed world) have moved from a dirty, germ-filled environment to a relatively clean one. In the past, your ancestors needed a strong immune system to survive and reproduce. In today’s world, your body is not subjected to the same strength and range of pathogens, and when your immune system doesn’t have something to target its energy on, it gets restless…
Your body has a kind of military that fights all kinds of viruses and microorganisms off. It has soldiers that seek out the enemy of your health, and sometimes those soldiers mistake structures in your body as something that needs to be attacked. Your immune system then gears up to fight those structures, and the result is autoimmune disease.
